A Gift of Love

Kids Helping Kids - See the full video story here

Have you ever wondered, as I have, how you could do something that would make a lasting impact for underprivileged kids in third world countries.

Well, just two years ago, 10 year old Alissa Coulter wondered the same thing. She actually naively believed that she could take a plane full of her friends and their families down to Mexico, just to love on some of the kids she had met there while on a family vacation.

Alissa's 8 year old brother Spencer and 6 year old sister Jacqueline decided they would like to go also and take some of their “loved” possessions to share with needy kids they had met in Mexico . They talked about the idea with their all their friends and family, who also got excited about the idea. Pretty soon there were so many kids that wanted to be a part of this vision that Alissa told her mom, “We’re going to need a plane!”

So Alissa’s mother arranged for a meeting with the senior executives at WestJet Airlines. The children then shared their dream that “If we just all share what we have, there wouldn’t be any children without… and they would know that we care.” The team at WestJet loved the idea and the compassion of the kids… and they offered to sponsor one of their planes.

Just five weeks later, over 60 children “Ambassadors” were accompanied by a parent and flew to Cuidad del Carmen in a jet loaded with toys, shoes, books and other necessary supplies. Over 3000 children had participated in putting together “Packages of Love” for children in need in Mexico .

Think for a moment how this would impact your life if you were an orphan child in Mexico . Nobody ever brings you gifts or toys. Most of your clothes are old and worn out. Your shoes (if you have any) likely do not fit properly because you’ve outgrown them. Maybe you have to beg or sell Chiclets on the street just to try and get some money to fill your hungry stomach.

Then a group of kids comes from Canada to visit you and give you toys and gifts and spends some time playing with you - just because they wanted to express love. Can you imagine how that would impact you?

For most of these orphan kids, there has probably never been anyone who has done anything so significant to express love to them. This is an event that will leave an indelible impression on their lives, a day they will never forget.

You can see the rest of the story on video here. We will be taking a WestJet plane full of kids and their parents from the Edmonton area to Acapulco in early spring of 2007.

How would you like to help out and make a lasting impact
on the lives of needy orphan kids in Mexico?
